What is an ingrown toenail?

Ingrown toenail is a condition where nail grows into the skin causing inflammation, pain and infection. If left untreated, this infection can spread into surrounding tissues and bones.

What causes ingrown toenail?

  • Improper trimming of the toenail

  • Heredity

  • Nail trauma

  • Fungus or other nail dystrophy

  • Ill-fitting shoes

How can it be treated?

  • Topical/oral antibiotics

  • Proper trimming of nail

  • Partial or total removal of nail

  • Partial or total nail matrixectomy - most commonly performed surgical procedure that removes both ingrown toenail and its nail roots to prevent the ingrown toenail from returning
